Though Apple quietly discontinued the inch MacBook Pro this week, hardly a tear was shed. The base model starts at 2. As we are wont to say, read on to find out. Screen notwithstanding, the most impressive feat is how small and light the MacBook Pro with Retina is.
Compared to the traditional inch MacBook Pro, the Retina model is about 25 percent lighter 4. While most of that is due to the thickness, all dimensions have shrunk a hair — and that smaller bezel also means we lose "MacBook Pro" branding on the front both of which we like.
All the familiar MacBook Pro elements are here, including a full backlit chiclet keyboard, large multitouch trackpad, p FaceTime HD camera, and speaker grilles to the left and right. Apple boasts that this has the best speakers, and compared with our last-generation MacBook Pro, the sound is markedly fuller and more clear, especially the bass.
Otherwise both the keyboard and trackpad feel the same as the old Pro — which is a good thing, as those are still some of the best in the laptop industry. Both very clicky and responsive. One last thing about the front, and this may seem weird: the front indentation you use for getting your finger under the lid to open the case is much less rough than past versions. As someone who often rests a thumb in that groove, this really does matter.
Besides the keyboard layout not size , another design choice thankfully brought over from the Air is ports on both side of the machine. Whereas the traditional Pro crowds pretty much everything on the left edge, the Retina model splits up the USB 3. Also along the left we have two Thunderbolt ports so much daisy chaining , a headphone jack, and the new MagSafe 2 adapter.
By default, we were mirroring our own display which subsequently letterboxed the laptop screen into a aspect ratio , but it can also work as an independent second display with its own color profile. Getting the new generation MBP down to a. Oh, and before we forget, the one-button battery indicator on the front left edge of Pro models? Sad for those that liked using it to check the charge mid-game or while the laptop was in a bag, inconsequential to everyone else.
The new MacBook Pro with Retina display boasts a Its 5. Pixel density for the Retina display is around ppi. Stay foolish, squinter. The other number worth mentioning here is the touted degree viewing angle, which which means you can see the screen from basically anywhere unless you're staring at the edge.
As of this writing, Safari is the only one of the big four browsers the others being Chrome, Firefox, and Opera to support Retina text — and the difference is striking. Side-by-side, the same text is noticeably more pixelated for non-Safari browsers. Thankfully, Google Docs looks great — but again, only in Safari. We expect these issue to be fixed in future app updates more on that later. What concerns us more, however, is the web itself. Just like with the third-generation iPad, if you're surfing the web with the new MacBook Pro, you may notice just how low-quality a lot of the images are.
The exception is Apple. Same goes for iPhoto and Preview. The Retina-optimized Final Cut Pro X also benefits by being able to show a full p video while still leaving room for all controls. As with the new iPad, we suspect app developers will be fairly quick to upgrade their apps to support the new Retina standard.
Some of the notable pain points for now include Kindle, Nook, and the entire Microsoft Office Suite — all the text looks jagged and pixelated in a very grating way. Sparrow has a very intriguing mix of good and bad text — the body text of each email is using Retina-optimized text, while the column view of email subject lines and all iconography is still pixelated. Again, like the new iPad, this is something we expect will be fixed over time as developers update to the new environment — and text-based apps like iA Writer already look gorgeous.
Apple has streamlined the Display settings menu in system preference. Gone is a numerical list of resolutions. Instead we have two radio buttons — "Best for Retina display," which is default and provides no further tweaking, and "Scaled.
You can opt for larger text that "looks like x " but screencaps at x i. Of course, pushing more pixels on a screen requires more processing power. Introduced in January , it is the higher-end model of the MacBook family , sitting above the consumer-focused MacBook Air. It is currently sold with inch, inch, and inch screens, all using variants of the Apple-designed M1 system on a chip. The inch model was introduced in January ; the inch model in April.
The second-generation model debuted in October in and inch variants, with a inch variant added in January Called the "unibody" model because its case was machined from a single piece of aluminum, it had a thinner flush display, a redesigned trackpad whose entire surface consisted of a single clickable button, and a redesigned keyboard. Updates brought Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel's Thunderbolt. The third-generation MacBook Pro was released in the inch in June, a inch model in October.
It eliminated Ethernet and FireWire ports and the optical drive. The fourth-generation MacBook Pro, released in October , adopted USB-C for all data ports and power and included a shallower "butterfly"-mechanism keyboard. On all but the base model, the function keys were replaced with a touchscreen strip called the Touch Bar with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button. A November revision to the fourth-generation MacBook Pro introduced the Magic Keyboard, which uses a scissor-switch mechanism.
The initial inch model with a screen set in narrower bezels was followed by a inch model in May Another revision to the fourth generation was released in November ; it was the first MacBook Pro to feature an Apple-designed system on a chip , the Apple M1. The fifth-generation MacBook Pro was released in October in and inch sizes. Powered by either M1 Pro or M1 Max chips , they are the first to be available only with an Apple silicon system on a chip.
This generation re-introduced MagSafe, function keys, and some other elements that had been removed from previous models. Initial first-generation inch models retains the two USB 2. The original case design was discontinued on October 14, , for the inch, and January 6, , for the inch.
On October 14, , in a press event at company headquarters , Apple officials announced a new inch MacBook Pro featuring a "precision aluminum unibody enclosure" and tapered sides similar to those of the MacBook Air. The unibody-construction MacBook Pro largely follows the styling of the original aluminum iMac and the MacBook Air and is slightly thinner than its predecessor, albeit wider and deeper due to the widescreen display. This version diverged from its inch sibling with an anti-glare "matte" screen option with the glossy finish standard and a non user-removable lithium polymer battery.
Adaptive charging, which uses a chip to optimize the charge flow to reduce wear and tear, extends the battery's overall life. Thunderbolt technology, Sandy Bridge dual-core Intel Core i5 and i7 on the inch model or quad-core i7 on the and inch models processors, and a high definition FaceTime camera were added on February 24, The chassis bottoms are also engraved differently from the models.
Prior to its discontinuation it was Apple's only product to still include an optical drive and a FireWire port, and only notebook with a hard disk drive and Ethernet port. The firm is also investigating similar cases across the United States. This "will repair affected MacBook Pro systems, free of charge". The program covered affected MacBook Pro models until December 31, , or four years from original date of sale.
The third-generation MacBook Pro was released in , marketed as the "MacBook Pro with Retina display" to differentiate it from the previous model: the inch in June , a inch model in October. The model name is no longer placed at the bottom of the screen bezel; instead, it is found on the underside of the chassis, similar to an iOS device and is the first Macintosh notebook to not have its model name visible during normal use.
The Retina models also have fewer user-accessible upgrade or replacement options than previous MacBooks. Unlike in previous generations, the memory is soldered onto the logic board and is therefore not upgradable. The solid state drive is not soldered and can be replaced by users, although it has a proprietary connector and form factor.
While the battery is glued in, recycling companies have stated that the design is only "mildly inconvenient" and does not hamper the recycling process. The initial revision includes Intel's third-generation Core i7 processors Ivy Bridge microarchitecture. The lower-end inch model only included integrated graphics while the higher-end model continued to include a discrete Nvidia graphics card in addition to integrated graphics.
On March 9, , the inch model was updated with Intel Broadwell processors, Iris graphics, faster flash storage based on PCIe 2. Apple continued to sell the inch model until July In June , Apple announced a worldwide recall for certain 15" MacBook Pro computers after receiving at least 26 reports of batteries becoming hot enough to produce smoke and inflict minor burns or property damage.
The problem affected some , computers, mostly sold between September and February The company asked customers to stop using their computers until Apple could replace the batteries. Apple unveiled fourth-generation and inch MacBook Pro models during a press event at their headquarters on October 27, All models, except for the baseline inch model, featured the Touch Bar, a new multi-touch-enabled OLED strip built into the top of the keyboard in place of the function keys.
The Touch Bar is abutted on its right by a sapphire-glass button that doubles as a Touch ID sensor and a power button. The models also introduced a "second-generation" butterfly-mechanism keyboard whose keys have more travel than the first iteration in the Retina MacBook. All ports have been replaced with either two or four combination Thunderbolt 3 ports that support USB-C 3. All versions can output to a 5K display; the inch models can drive two such displays. The inch models include a discrete Radeon Pro , or graphics card in addition to the integrated Intel graphics.
The flash storage in the Touch Bar models is soldered to the logic board and is not upgradeable, while in the inch model without Touch Bar, it is removable, but difficult to replace, as it is a proprietary format of SSD storage. A GB [a] storage option was added for the base inch model, down from the base GB [a] storage. On July 12, , Apple updated the Touch Bar models with Intel Coffee Lake quad-core processors in inch models and six-core processors in inch models, updated graphics cards, third-generation butterfly keyboards that introduced new symbols for the control and option keys, Bluetooth 5 , T2 SoC Chip , True Tone display technology, and larger-capacity batteries.
On May 21, , Apple announced updated Touch Bar models with newer processors, with an eight-core Core i9 standard for the higher-end inch model, and an updated keyboard manufactured with "new materials" across the line. A report by AppleInsider claimed that the updated "Butterfly" keyboard fails twice as often as previous models, often due to particles stuck beneath the keys.
The fourth-generation MacBook Pro received mixed reviews. On May 4, , Apple announced an updated inch model with the Magic Keyboard. The two Thunderbolt port version has the same Coffee Lake processors, graphics, and maximum storage and memory as the two Thunderbolt port models. The supported external displays was reduced to one, as the previous Intel-based models supported two 4K displays.
Apple addressed many criticisms of the previous generation by restoring hard function keys in place of the Touch Bar, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, MagSafe charging, and a higher base memory. Other additions include a Liquid Retina XDR display with thinner bezels and an iPhone-like notch, ProMotion variable refresh rate, a p webcam , Wi-Fi 6 , 3 Thunderbolt ports, a 6-speaker sound system supporting Dolby Atmos , and support of multiple external displays.
These new models feature a thicker and more-squared design than their Intel-based predecessors. The keyboard features full-sized function keys, with the keyboard set in a "double anodized" black well. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Line of notebook computers.
